A Short User's Summary of Bench Monsoon Procedures 4-15-08 I. Abbreviations MOP - Monsoon Observing Platform GUI - Graphial User Interface PAN - Pixel Acquisition Node MCC - Monsoon Camera Control II. Startup 1. Login: observer 2. Password: standard WIYN password. An X11 window will appear. 3. Start the PAN by double-clicking on the "Start benchPan" icon. Five windows will appear: a. Shell - Start benchPan b. Pan Capture c. Pan Daemon d. Pan Process Algorithims e. Pan Server These can all be iconified. 2. Start the MOP by double-clicking on the "Start MOP" icon. Three windows will appear and also momentarily an "initializing camera" banner: a. Start MOP-bench b. DS9 c. MOP debug log One can also use the shell window and start an "xgterm &" for IRAF use. Start the "cl" in the home directory where the login.cl file exists. III. Observing 1. Set the data directory if something different than the default is desired. Create a directory by clicking the directory button on the MCC GUI and type the desired new directory in the "selection" box. 2. Select the gain with the "Gain" button on the MCC GUI. 3. Select the desired binning with the "Bin" menu button on the MCC GUI. 4. Set the Exposure type, Number of Frames, and Exposure time on the MCC GUI. 5. Enter the image file name and number. Subsequent images will be incremented automatically if desired. 6. Click the "Observe" button on the MCC GUI. 7. Comments can be typed into the "Comments" field before or during the integration. 8. The read out data will be displayed in the DS9 image display window. Standard IRAF tasks can be used to plot and examine data. IV. Troubleshooting 1. If error messages appear in the MOP debug log window, pull down the PAN menu on the MCC GUI and select "Reset PAN". If the reset is successful as indicated in the MOP debug log, continue operations. If not, try resetting again. If the reset fails, exit the MOP with the MCC File menu button and double click the "clear PAN" button. Then restart the MOP. V. Software Shutdown On the MCC GUI "File" menu, select either: 1. Exit - closes the MOP interface 2. Exit and shutdown PAN - closes the MOP interface and shuts down the PAN. VI. Miscellaneous 1. WIFOE GUI startup: On almond, SSH vanilla cd /usr/local/wifoe ./start-wifoegui 2. Bench GUI startup: In oatmeal VNCserver on almond (oatmeal:2), start up GUI from bench icon. 3. For remote observing start the vncviewer on cork with "vncviewer -shared cork:1"
