"Science with the WIYN One Degree Imager (ODI)" Meeting-In-a-Meeting

The partners of WIYN Observatory held a three session "meeting-in-a-meeting" on Tuesday, June 9 and Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at the AAS meeting in Pasadena to educate and engage the astronomical community in planning science with the WIYN One Degree Imager (ODI), which is scheduled for installation on the WIYN 3.5m telescope on Kitt Peak mountain in 2010. Below is a brief description of each session, with links to the speaker presentations (all in pdf format). Please note that there is still an opportunity to participate in the Yale survey (see presentation 231.04).

Tuesday, June 9, 2009: 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.
Session 220: "An Overview of the WIYN One Degree Imager (ODI) and Its Technical Capabilities"

This session focused on educating the community about the ODI instrument, the WIYN facility, and what the expectations are for what WIYN+ODI can provide, including an description of the scientific impact that wide-field imagers can have.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009: 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Session 231: "Planned ODI Science by the WIYN Partners: An Invitation to Participate in the Yale Survey".

This session was to educate and engage the astronomical community in planned science with the WIYN One Degree Imager (ODI). There were three brief talks on the scientific interests of the astronomers at the WIYN partner institutions, followed by a presentation about the scientific goals of a planned 90 night survey led by Dr. Charles Bailyn. Yale is inviting outside collaborators to participate in planning and carrying out the survey. After the talks, there was a half-hour open forum to discuss possible ways to extend the survey in a number of directions, depending on the interests of the internal and potential external members of the survey team. Opportunities to join the survey collaboration are still possible. See presentation 231.04 for more details.

Wednesday, June 10, 2009: 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.
Session 241: "Looking Up and Out: Community Interest in ODI".

This session focused on broader community interest in science with ODI. After a brief review of the WIYN partner scientific interests discussed the day before (session 231), there was a panel discussion led by community members who are not located at WIYN partner institutions to discuss their interests in ODI, followed by a moderated forum to provide an opportunity for the audience to discuss ideas.
