What does ODI stand for?
One Degree Imager
What year was it first envisioned?
2000
How tall is it?
Approximately as tall as Shaquille O'Neal.
How big is the field of view?
1 degree square, which is an area 4 times the size of the full moon.
Who is paying for it?
The WIYN partners (Wisconsin, Indiana, Yale and NOAO) and the National Science Foundation (NSF)
What does the tip/tilt do?
Increases the image quality by stabilizing the images. The tip/tilt or OTA will be able to compensate for images motion due to atmospheric turbulence, telescope shake, and tracking errors by locally shifting the image directly within the CCD.
Who designed ODI?
Gary Muller did the instrument design and Charles Harmer did the optics design.
Who is building ODI?
OTA CCD design - Semiconductor Technology Associates
OTA CCD fabrication - Dalsa
Packaging, characterization and mounting of OTA CCDs - Univeristy of Arizona Imaging Technology Laboratory
Shutter - University of Bonn
Filters (g,r,i) - Barr Associates
Controllers - Univeristy of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy
Optics Coatings - Infinite Optics
Optics - SESO
Focal baseplate - Coorstek
Major fabrication and assembly of parts – NOAO
Who is allowed to use ODI?
Any of the WIYN partners which includes faculty and students alike.
How long does it take to read out an ODI image?
Approximately 10 seconds
How much data does ODI generate in a night?
Between 1 and 4 terabytes.
How much does ODI weigh?
Approximately 2500 pounds.
Will students get to use ODI?
Yes. ODI will be used for astronomy research by graduate and undergraduate students at all of the partner universities.
What is so special about ODI?
ODI uses special detectors that can compensate for atmospheric dispersion over the entire field of view.
How big is 1 image?
1 billion pixels and 2 Gigabytes
How is ODI mounted?
ODI will be permanently mounted at one of the two nazmyth foci.
How often will ODI be used?
ODI will use 60% of the total WIYN observing time.
How many filters can ODI hold?
ODI will have the capability to hold 9 filters.
