The partners of WIYN Observatory are holding a three session "meeting-in-a-meeting" on Tuesday, June 9 and Wednesday, June 10
at
the AAS meeting in Pasadena to educate and engage the astronomical community in planning science with the WIYN One Degree Imager (ODI),
which is scheduled for installation on the WIYN 3.5m telescope on Kitt Peak mountain in February 2010. Here are the meeting details:
Title: Science with the WIYN One Degree Imager (ODI) Meeting-in-a-Meeting
Organizer: Patricia Knezek (knezek@noao.edu)
Session 1: "An Overview of the WIYN One Degree Imager (ODI) and Its Technical Capabilities"
This is the first of the three sessions, and it will
occur on Tuesday, June 9 from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. It will consist of four speakers who will focus on educating the community about the ODI
instrument, the WIYN facility, and what the expectations are for what WIYN+ODI can provide, including an description of the scientific impact that
wide-field imagers can have. The first speaker will be Dr. Daniel Harbeck, WIYN, ODI Project Scientist. He will present an overview of the ODI
project. The second speaker will be Dr. Pierre Martin, WIYN Director. He will present the Operation Plan for ODI, including queue observing and
the data pipeline. The third speaker will be Dr. Ian Dell'Antonio, Brown University, NOAO User's Committee and ODI Science Working Group
member. He will present an overview of the types of science achievable with ODI. The fourth speaker will be Dr. Jean-Charles Cuillandre,
Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope (CFHT). He will give a talk on CFHT Legacy Survey and the impact that science with wide field imagers can
have.
Session 2: "Planned ODI Science by the WIYN Partners: An Invitation to Participate in the Yale Survey".
This is the second of three sessions and it will take place Tuesday, June 9 from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. There will be three brief (~8 minutes + 2 minutes for questions) talks
on the scientific interests of the astronomers at the WIYN partner institutions. These will be given by Dr. Jay Gallagher (University of Wisconsin),
Dr. Katherine Rhode (Indiana University), and Dr. Tom Matheson (NOAO). This will lead into a 30 minute talk by Dr. Charles Bailyn of Yale
University about the scientific goals of a planned 90 night survey that Dr. Bailyn will lead. Yale has committed 90 nights of its share of WIYN time
to this survey over the first 3 years of ODI operations. Yale invites outside collaborators to apply through NOAO to participate in planning and
carrying out the survey. The survey strategy is designed to meet the requirements for searching for high redshift galaxies and measuring
parallaxes of nearby stars, but a variety of other scientific goals can also be achieved. The 90 night Yale commitment will cover a baseline
strategy. This session will end with a half-hour open forum to discuss possible ways to extend the survey in a number of directions, depending
on the interests of the internal and potential external members of the survey team.
Session 3: "Looking Up and Out: Community Interest in ODI".
This is the final of three sessions and it will take place Wednesday, June 10 from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m., with a focus on broader community interest in science
with ODI. There will be a brief review by Dr. Pierre Martin (WIYN Director) of the WIYN partner scientific interests discussed the day before.
This will serve as a lead-in to a panel discussion with community members who are not located at WIYN partner institutions to discuss their
interests in ODI, and will include a moderated forum to provide an opportunity for the audience to discuss ideas. ODI Team members will be
present to answer any technical questions that may arise. We also invite abstracts for posters on scientific projects that could be
accomplished (in whole or in part) with ODI. Posters will be displayed for one full day. If you are interested in submitting such a poster,
follow the standard AAS abstract submission procedure. Once you submit your abstract, you will be offered the option for being included in a
pre-planned session. Please select "Science with the WIYN One Degree Imager (ODI)". For further information, contact Dr. Patricia Knezek,
