Project Manager for the WIYN One Degree Imager

 

The WIYN Consortium is seeking an experienced project manager to direct a motivated team in building forefront instrumentation for the WIYN 3.5-m astronomical telescope on Kitt Peak. The primary project is the One Degree Imager (ODI), a multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art, Gigapixel camera using a revolutionary kind of charge-coupled detector. In collaboration with the Project Engineer and Project Scientist, the successful applicant will provide the management leadership in order to design and develop the detector arrays, the mechanical assembly,  the optical filters, the optical corrector for the telescope, the data acquisition electronics, and the computers and software that collect and reduce the data, with emphasis in the following areas:

 

·        Create and maintain project plans

·        Develop work breakdown structures

·        Prepare and track schedules and budgets

·        Manage and monitor project resources.

·        Devise risk management plans

·        Coordinate activities of geographically distributed partners, collaborators, and vendors.

·        Assist with contract preparation and monitoring

·        Organize project design reviews

·        Prepare status reports and presentations for funding agencies

 

This is a senior position requiring a minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering management. A Master’s degree in engineering or management is required. The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills and a strong track record in managing matrixed resources. The Project Manager reports directly to the Director of the WIYN Observatory, as do the Project Engineer and Project Scientist.

 

The Project Manager appointment is for four years with the potential for continued employment with future WIYN projects.
