2.2.    Logging in

The observer logs into sand as user nirim. The account password is the usual mountain password. The control window “irtool” on wheat should start up automatically, and be displayed on the sand monitor. It will appear with the message indicating that there is not enough information to start the VME, and you need to configure things.  Click on the “acknowledge” button.  If not, or if you need to restart something, you should be able to select “Restart NIRIM” using the mouse.  Go to the background and click on the right mouse button.  If that does not work for some reason, do the following after logging into sand as nirim:

  1. open a terminal or Xgterm window on sand's right-hand monitor and type:
  2. source ~/.cshrc
  3. xhost +wheat
  4. rlogin wheat
  5. setenv DISPLAY sand:0.0
  6. irtool

In addition, the “NIRIM” GUI that is used to control dithering should automatically come up.  If not, or if you need to restart something, you should be able to select “Restart

The left-hand monitor of sand should automatically display an IRAF image window (ximtool) and a reduction Xgterm window. If not, do the following:

  1. Move the mouse to the left hand screen and open an Xgterm window and type:
  2. ximtool-alt &
  3. cl

You are now ready to initialize NIRIM.
