WIYN - Remote Observer Instructions

Following are instructions and commands a remote observer at Wisconsin, Indiana or, Yale might use for a remote observing session at the WIYN telescope.

Remote Mini-Mosaic

To display a VNC window to Pearl on your machine the command is:

vncviewer -shared -bgr233 -depth 8 pearl.kpno.noao.edu:1

This will automatically connect to Pearl and display its VNC desktop giving you access to the ARCON data acquisition and other instrument control.

If you need to display any other graphical tool such as, ds9, or ximtool on your machine you first need to login to sand with ssh:

ssh -X wiyn_ccd@sand.kpno.noao.edu

Then, to remotely display say, ds9, you would type:

ds9 &

NOTE: It is recommended that you do not attempt to display ds9, or ximtool inside the VNC. Also, only one display tool can be running (either at the telesope or on your machine) or the automatic display at readout will not work properly.

Remote HYDRA

Two VNC viewers are required for observing with HYDRA; one to access the HYDRA configuration software and, one to access the data acquisition and bench spectrograph control.

On seperate terminal screens, or monitors use the following commands to connect automatically to Vanilla and Oatmeal, respectively, and display their VNC desktops on you machine.

For data aquistion, and the Bench Setup GUI:
vncviewer -shared -bgr233 -depth 8 vanilla.kpno.noao.edu:1

Using the background menu you can bring up all programs; data acquisition, data reduction, Bench Setup, etc.

For Hydra configuration:
vncviewer -shared -bgr233 -depth 8 oatmeal.kpno.noao.edu:1

The HYDRA software is started from the command line in a terminal window using the following command: hydrawiyn

If you need to display any other graphical programs, such as a display tool, on your machine you will first need to login to Vanilla with ssh:

ssh -X hydra@vanilla.kpno.noao.edu

Then, to remotely display say, ds9, you would type:

ds9 &

NOTE: It is recommended that you do not attempt to display ds9, or ximtool inside the VNC. Also, only one display tool can be running (either at the telesope or on your machine) or the automatic display at readout will not work properly.

Remote DENSPAK or SPARSPAK

You need only the VNC viewer to Vanilla:

vncviewer -shared -bgr233 -depth 8 vanilla.kpno.noao.edu:1

If it is not present within the VNC viewer, you will need the WIFOE GUI:

From the background menu select Wifoe GUI.

Again, if you need to display any other graphical tool such as, ds9, or ximtool on your machine you first need to login to sand with ssh:

ssh -X wiyn_ccd@sand.kpno.noao.edu

Then, to remotely display say, ds9, you would type:

ds9 &

NOTE: It is recommended that you do not attempt to display ds9, or ximtool inside the VNC. Also, only one display tool can be running (either at the telesope or on your machine) or the automatic display at readout will not work properly.
